POE ALONE
The Last Appeal

By Norman George. Lighting Design: Henry Keating.
Costume: Elissa Della-Piana. Sound: Chart Productions.

Hailed as definitive by critics, Poe biographers, and literary scholars, Norman George’s portrayal of master storyteller Edgar Allan Poe (1809—1849) has been called “the nearest thing to Poe in the flesh” (New York Times), “outstanding” (Boston Globe), and “spine-chilling” (People Weekly) since its introduction in 1983.

The play’s contents and characterization draw from published accounts of Poe’s lectures and parlor readings, from life-portraits and daguerreotypes of the poet, and from the elocutionary conventions and standard-American and Eastern-Virginian pronunciations of the era.

Based on accounts of the poet’s last public appearance, the 80-minute performance includes excerpts from Poe’s best-loved tales and poems and in a penetrating glimpse into the mind and motives of America’s most internationally revered and translated author.

“Poe Alone” is endorsed by the Poe Museum, Richmond, VA.
