Adapted by Norman George from the works and correspondence
of
Sarah Helen Whitman and Edgar Allan Poe. Lighting
Design: Henry Keating. Costumes: Elissa Della-Piana.
Premiered
at the Providence Athenaeum in 1986, this two-actor,
one-act drama recounts Poes turbulent 1848
courtship of Providence poet Sarah Helen Whitman
in a series of flashbacks incorporating some of
the most famous love letters in American literary
history. Love Letters in broadcloth
and hoopskirt.
Saturdays
performance at the Providence Athenaeum was a rare
treat. Norman George, as Poe, was genius. Hes
played Poe before, touring nationally in Poe
Alone, and it shows. For those Poe fans whove
read lines by and about Poe and imagine the cadence
of his voice and the power of his presence, George
seemed like Poe coming to life.

actors Norman George and Marcia Permutter brought
a taste of the torment and agony within the hearts
of the tortured lovers in a crisp, believeable,
and, at times, heart-moving performance. It was
an intelligent play [to] stir the senses and rouse
the emotions.
